The Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association (Mauritius) Wins Award of US$ 7,920 for Alumni Competition

September 28, 2009

On Monday, September 28, 2009, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Craig White of the Embassy of the United States of America signed a grant agreement with the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association, one of the winners of a worldwide US Department of State-sponsored alumni competition.

The association was awarded US$ 7,920.00 (equivalent of Rs. 240,000) for a brainstorming half-day seminar on leadership, project design and project implementation. A follow-up seminar is also scheduled in 2010.

Mauritius has participated in the Program since 1982 and the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association of Mauritius was officially registered in 1990.  To date, the association has some 25 members. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program was initiated in 1978 to honor the memory of the late American Senator and former Vice President, Hubert H. Humphrey.

The purpose of the Humphrey Fellowship Program is to provide mid-career professionals from selected countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, with a non-degree program combining academic and professional experience directly related to their responsibilities in their home countries. Humphrey Fellows are hosted by a U.S. university for one year, while developing their own individual programs tailored to their career development needs. Non-degree coursework, independent projects, consultations with U.S. faculty and off-campus experts, field trips, and special seminars are just a few of the projects that can be undertaken by Humphrey Fellows.

There is need to create a framework within which interactions can be fostered, the kind which enhance the intellectual and professional development of the alumni through organizing of workshops, seminars, symposia and other self-development programs.

The Embassy of the United States of America sees through the project of the Hubert Humphrey Alumni Association a stepping-stone in the creation of a Mauritius Alumni Association by September 2010.  And to make this a reality, the Embassy appeals to all those who have benefitted from a US Government sponsored program or who have studied in the United States to contact us contact us at email: usainfo@intnet.mu or telephone: 202 4441.
