Cyber Identification and Seizure of Digital Evidence Course for Mauritian Law Enforcement Officials

September 15-23, 2008

The Cyber Identification and Seizure of Digital Evidence Course sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Office of Anti-Terrorism Assistance (ATA) was held from September 15 through September 23, 2008 at La Plantation Hotel in Balaclava.

Four instructors from the U.S. Department of State Office of Anti-Terrorism Assistance provided the seven day course which included hands-on practical scenarios that allowed the twenty-two participants to learn, remove, and replace the various components of a computer system.  The objective of the course was to teach junior investigators and patrol officers to recognize digital evidence upon entering a scene of crime and carry out the procedures required to secure it using generally accepted methods and practices.

In addition, the participants learned proper collection techniques which consist of methods to properly approach, document, sketch, photograph, and search a crime scene.  They were also introduced to the process of digital imaging.

Having completed this course, the officers have received an overview of computer hardware, have observed and performed cyber crime scene procedures and have performed hands-on cyber incident response techniques.
