U.S. Defense Institute of International Legal Studies Conducts Training on Peacekeeping Operations

Four instructors from the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) of Newport, Rhode Island, U.S., conducted a week-long training seminar from September 8 to 12 at Diamond Hall, Mobile Wing, Vacoas.
Forty-five participants, including police officers and State Law Office representatives participated in the training seminar, which focuses on Peacekeeping Operations in Accordance with the Rule of Law. The topics covered included: the UN Charter and UN Mandates, the UN Department of Peacekeeping operations, UN Police in Peace Operations Human Rights and Peace Operations, Mauritians involvement in Peace Operations, Law of armed Conflict and Rules of Engagement in Peace Operations, legal status of UN personnel, Mauritian capacity and current approach to participating in peace operations, peace building and integrated missions, humanitarian assistance in peace operations, creating a post-conflict secure environment, and National policy for peace operations.
The U.S. Embassy organized the training seminar as part of its International Military Education Training Program (IMET). The IMET Program, funded by the United States Government and administered by the Department of State, was established in Mauritius in 1997. The U.S. Government has awarded grants of 4.1 million rupees for military training to the Government of Mauritius this year through IMET program.
