U.S. Government Donates Funds for Street Children Project and Non-Violence Awareness Campaigns in Educational Institutions

The U.S. Government has signed a grant agreement in the amount of US $5,000 (Rs 159,000) with the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association of Mauritius. The grant will assist the Humphrey Alumni Association in organizing workshops in collaboration with the non-governmental organization, “Service d’Accompagnement, de Formation, d’Intégration et de Réhabilitation des Enfants” (SAFIRE) for approximately 200 street children.
The workshops, part of the rehabilitation program for street children, aims at providing information on substance abuse, diseases and illnesses related to substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and preventive measures.
The U.S. Government has signed a second grant agreement in the amount of US $ 1,500 (Rs 45,000) with the Anti-Violence Support Organization. The grant will be used in organizing activities leading to the proper sensitization for non-violence in pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions and to reward the winners of a literary competition held at these institutions. The U.S. Embassy has donated books and materials for future projects to the organization.
The U.S. Government reiterates its commitment to assist the Mauritian Government and non-governmental organizations in their efforts to sensitize the population on non-violence and providing assistance to vulnerable groups of Mauritian society.
