U.S. Government Donates Funds for Project to Stop Child Prostitution

September 1, 2006

The U.S. Government has signed a grant agreement in the amount of US $12,000.00 with the Centre d’Education et de Développement pour les Enfants Mauriciens (CEDEM), Vacoas.  The grant will assist CEDEM in conducting the project entitled: “STOP! Full Stop to Child Prostitution” through training workshops on the commercial and sexual exploitation of children.

The grant will enable CEDEM to train facilitators and print material to combat child prostitution.  CEDEM will conduct two-day workshops over a one year period for children ages 13 to 17.   Meetings will be held for parents to understand the importance of their children’s participation in the workshops.  Some of the workshops will include sensitizing children on the problems of child prostitution and provide counseling for children at risk.

The U.S. Government reiterates its commitment to assist the Mauritian Government and Non-Governmental Organizations in their efforts to sensitize the population on child prostitution.
