Training Provided by the United States Coast Guard Mobile Training Team

On June 21, Minister of Environment Anil Bachoo and U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Stephen Schwartz, will attend the graduation ceremony of forty-three participants of the United States Coast Guard Training Course on Marine Safety and Environmental Security.
Two instructors from the United States Coast Guard International Training Division, Yorktown, Virginia, conducted the 10-day training course (June 12-21) at the Cargo Handling Corporation in Port Louis. Participants included officers from the National Coast Guard, Mauritius Marine Authority, Cargo Handling Corporation, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Infrastructure and Shipping, National Security Service, Customs Department, and the Solicitor’s General Office.
The topics covered in the course include Maritime Pollution Laws (MARPOL), Safety of Life at Sea Conventions, Freight Vessel/Tank Vessel Navigation Safety and Pollution, Prevention Examinations, Maritime Law Enforcement Principles, International Hazard Classes, Waterfront Facility Designations and Inspections, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), Cargo Stowage and Segregation, Spill Containment/Recovery Devices and Techniques, Freight Container Inspections, Maritime Occupational Safety and Health, and Shoreline Cleanup Techniques and Damage Assessment.
This training course was organized by the U.S. Embassy as part of its International Military Education Training Program (IMET). The IMET Program, funded by the United States Government and administered by the Department of State, was established in Mauritius in 1997. This year, the Embassy has awarded IMET grants totaling three point eight million rupees to the Government of Mauritius for military and civilian training.
