U.S. Government Provides Tsunami Capacity Building Training

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the United States and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO are collaborating to offer a one-week training program on Seismology and Tsunami Warning for officials from the Government of Mauritius. This U.S. government funded training will cover wide-ranging topics from tsunami warning and mitigation to tsunami preparedness and will involve hands-on and theoretical training. Representatives from the a variety of government offices, including the Meteorological Services, Oceanographic Institute, Ministry of Environment, Police, Port Authorities, Fisheries Department, and University of Mauritius, are expected to attend.
Walter Mooney, Ph.D., Research Seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is Program Leader for the USGS contribution to the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System. Laura Kong, Ph.D., is the Director of the International Tsunami Information Center which works with countries to build and strengthen their tsunami warning and preparedness capabilities.
