U.S. Government Contributes $50,000 to Seychelles Tsunami Disaster Relief

Following the extensive damage caused to Seychelles by the Indian Ocean Tsunami on Sunday December 26, 2004, including the loss of three lives, the U.S. Government has donated $50,000 to the emergency appeal of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles to address the immediate needs of those most severely affected by the Tsunami.
Three hundred U.S. Navy Sailors from the U.S.S. The Sullivans were in the Seychelles January 4-7 to help with the cleanup efforts. The U.S.S. Hue City also arrived in the Seychelles on Saturday January 8 and the crew is helping with the post Tsunami Community Relations Projects (COMREL) in conjunction with the Seychelles National Disaster Committee. The U.S.S. Hue City will remain in port for several days.
In addition, the USAID/OFDA (Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance) Regional Advisor for Southern Africa traveled to Seychelles on January 6 - 11 to assess the situation and to meet with Government officials and representatives of the relief community.
