Ambassador Price's Farewell to the Seychelles
June 21, 2005
Since my arrival as United States Ambassador to Seychelles, Mauritius, and the Union of Comoros in April 2002, I have worked very hard at strengthening the ties between the U.S. and Seychelles. I departed my post as Ambassador on June 17, which prevented me from visiting Seychelles for Constitution Day. I have always been impressed with the accomplishments of your country - one of the smallest in the world in population, but able to stand with pride among all nations.
Seychellois enjoy a high standard of living, with a good medical infrastructure, and probably the most beautiful environment in the world. The Seychelles government, partnering with foreign institutions including the United States government and NGO’s, has done a superb job protecting its unique environment while sustaining its tourism and fishing industries. Your environment is a treasure, and I applaud continuing efforts to protect it.
As I depart I also feel that there is much work to be done to preserve and increase the level of prosperity Seychelles has already attained. The currency cannot remain overvalued over the long-term if the economy is to continue to grow. Privatization needs to move ahead. Foreign debt needs to be reduced. All of these problems must be tackled if Seychelles is going to achieve the growth it has known in the past. To address these problems is going to take courage and some hard decisions by those in power. It will also entail some sacrifice. If these problems are addressed, investment and jobs are sure to increase. Hard currency will flow into Seychelles. All sectors of the economy and all Seychellois will benefit.
The United States has had a long and close relationship with Seychelles. I am certain this relationship will continue. The U.S. Navy greatly enjoys the beauty of Seychelles and the hospitality and friendliness of the Seychellois.
As I leave, I feel very close to the Seychelles, despite the great distance between our two countries. We enjoy a long close relationship that dates back many years. I am envious of the man or woman who will eventually fill my shoes. He or she will find a ready partner on many issues. We have accomplished so much in my time. I remain hopeful for the future of Seychelles.
